My new year resolutions, or rather intentions as I like to call them, came straight from my heart. Because we already know what we desire, it's just that we ignore our feelings and try to live for everyone else around us. And when we do this, we are setting ourselves up for failure.
Let's take the example of a goal to lose weight. I'm pretty sure plenty of women have made this their number one resolution. If their motivation is to look good in a pair of designer jeans or be able to wear a bikini on the beach, they are going to fail. Those are reasons outside of how they want to feel. But setting an intention based on a desire, means you are able to create changes that will truly nourish and fulfill.
What if those same women set an intention to lose weight so they could fulfill a desire. It could be to have enough energy to hike a favorite trail, or fit enough to walk the streets of Paris, or strong enough to swim in the ocean. Even setting a simple goal like be energetic enough to go to the park and play with your child can give you the best motivation.
Because having goals that are attached to a desired feeling is the way to lasting success.
The other evening I had an opportunity to see Danielle LaPorte speak at the Yoga Journal Live! conference in San Francisco. She is amazing. If you haven't heard of Danielle, she's the author of the books Fire Starter Sessions and The Desire Map, and she's a kick ass woman entrepreneur! She shares from her heart and soul, and her stories are inspirational and thought provoking.
It was a perfect beginning to my new year.
I'm fired up to start "feeling" my desires. To live the life I imagine, and to make goals with soul. There was something she said that evening which has stuck with me. It's that "everything we buy, everything we do, and everything we want, is based on how we want to feel." Meaning, we make our choices based on desire. Everything leads back to how we want to feel.
Ask yourself, "are my new year resolutions going to make me feel the way I desire?" If not, it's time to re-evaluate and think deeper about what makes you get excited. What are you missing in your life right now? And how will you make it happen?
I walked away that evening feeling full of desire and ready to create the life I deserve. It's your turn now.
